Areas are computed with a spherical-earth formula rather than a flat approximation, so a field at 60° north measures as accurately as one at the equator.
Your drawing and every measurement stay in your browser — nothing you trace is uploaded, and orangebot receives none of it. Two requests do leave your browser, because a map needs them: tiles are fetched from OpenStreetMap, and searching for a place sends that query to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Skip the search box and only tiles are requested.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How accurate is measuring land area from a map?
- The maths is exact to within a fraction of a percent: areas use a spherical-earth formula, so they hold up at any latitude. The real limit is your tracing — how precisely you can see and click the true boundary on the imagery. Treat the result as a good estimate for planning, fencing, seed or fertiliser, not as a substitute for a licensed survey or a deed description.
- How many acres is my lot?
- An acre is 43,560 square feet — a square roughly 209 ft on a side. So a 100 ft × 109 ft lot is about a quarter acre, and a 150 ft × 150 ft lot is about 0.52 acres. The table further down this page lists the common lot and field sizes people ask about most.
- Can I measure more than one parcel at once?
- Yes. Close one shape and start clicking a new one — each gets its own numbered badge on the map and its own row in the panel, and the panel also shows the combined total. Delete any single shape with the bin icon without disturbing the others.
- Why am I warned that the boundary crosses itself?
- If two edges of your outline cross, the shape is a figure-eight and its two lobes have opposite signed areas, which cancel out — there is no single honest number to report. Rather than print a misleading figure the tool flags the shape and asks you to move a corner so no two edges cross.
- Is my location or the shape I draw uploaded anywhere?
- No. The drawing and every calculation happen in your browser and are never sent to orangebot. Two things do leave your browser, because a map needs them: the map tiles are fetched from OpenStreetMap, and if you use the search box your query goes to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Nothing is stored, and you can skip the search entirely by panning the map by hand.
- Can I work in metric instead of acres?
- Yes. Area switches between acres, square feet, square metres and hectares, and distance between feet and metres. One hectare is 10,000 m², which is about 2.471 acres.
How to measure land area on a map
- Find the land. Search for an address, town or landmark, or tap "My location". Then zoom in until the boundary you want to trace is clearly visible.
- Click each corner. Click once on every corner of the parcel, following the boundary around. A dashed outline and the running area follow your clicks.
- Close the shape. Double-click the final corner — or press Enter — to close the polygon. Press Escape to throw away a shape you are part-way through.
- Read and switch units. The panel shows area and perimeter for each shape plus a combined total. Switch between acres, square feet, m² and hectares at any time; the numbers convert instantly.

An acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, and a hectare as 10,000 square metres. Every figure below follows from those two definitions, so you can check any row with a calculator.

- A square acre measures √43,560 ≈ 208.71 ft on a side, but an acre can be any shape — a long thin strip of 43,560 sq ft is still exactly one acre.
- To convert quickly: acres = square feet ÷ 43,560, and acres = hectares × 2.4711.
- US land descriptions often divide a 640-acre section: a "quarter section" is 160 acres, and a "quarter-quarter" is 40 acres.
