Frequently Asked Questions

Why is MP4 so much smaller than GIF?
GIF stores full uncompressed or LZW frames with a 256-color palette. MP4 uses advanced H.264 inter-frame motion compression, typically reducing file size by 80% to 90% while improving visual quality.
Why are video dimensions rounded to even numbers?
H.264 YUV420p chroma subsampling requires video width and height to be divisible by 2. Our transcoder automatically pads odd-dimension GIFs by 1 pixel to guarantee playback compatibility.
What does the +faststart flag do?
The +faststart flag moves the MP4 index metadata (moov atom) to the beginning of the file, allowing videos to start streaming immediately in browsers before fully downloading.
Does video encoding happen on a remote server?
No. Transcoding runs completely on your device using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your files never leave your computer or phone.

Your GIF is converted to MP4 locally in your browser via WebAssembly without uploading any video data.
