GPA Calculator
Calculate your GPA from letter grades and credit hours. Add each course with its letter grade (A+ through F, or P/NP) and credit count, optionally include a previous cumulative GPA with its credits, and press Calculate to get your GPA on the 4.33 scale along with total credits/hours. A second section tells you what additional GPA you need per new credit to reach a target GPA. Everything runs locally in your browser.
Enter courses, grades and credits
For each course pick the letter grade (A+, A, A− … D−, F; use P or NP for pass/fail courses that carry no GPA points) and type the credit hours. Course names are optional labels. Press "Add row" for more courses or the × button to delete one.
Optionally add your previous cumulative GPA
Tick "Add previous cumulative GPA/credits" and enter your existing cumulative GPA (0–4.33) and the credits behind it. Those credits are folded into the weighted average, so one good semester lifts the whole GPA a little instead of standing alone.
Press Calculate and read your GPA
You get the GPA rounded to two decimals plus total credits/hours. Copy the result to your clipboard, or press Reset to clear the rows, the cumulative fields and the result. In-app validation flags missing grades or credits before any calculation.
GPA table (4.33 scale)
The GPA is a weighted average of the grades: the credit hours of each class are its weight and the numeric grade is taken from this table. Formally, GPA = w₁×g₁ + w₂×g₂ + … + wₙ×gₙ, where each weight wᵢ equals the class credits divided by the total credits (wᵢ = cᵢ / Σc).
| Grade | GPA |
|---|---|
| A+ | 4.33 |
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| D- | 0.67 |
| F | 0.00 |
P (pass) and NP (no pass) rows carry no GPA points and are left out of the average; their credits still count toward total credits/hours.
How GPA is calculated — worked examples
- Basic credit-weighted GPA
- A (4.00) for 3 credits in Algebra and B (3.00) for 3 credits in History: GPA = (3 × 4.00 + 3 × 3.00) / 6 = 21 / 6 = 3.50, with 6 total credits. The A+ ceiling of the table is 4.33, so a semester of straight A+ grades yields 4.33, not 4.00.
- A failing grade pulls the average down
- A+ (4.33) for 4 credits plus F (0) for 2 credits: GPA = (4 × 4.33 + 2 × 0) / 6 = 17.32 / 6 ≈ 2.89 — even four credits of A+ cannot outrun a two-credit zero. Every graded course needs credits greater than 0 for it to count.
- Merging a previous cumulative GPA
- With a previous cumulative GPA of 3.00 over 30 credits, one semester of A (4.00) for 3 credits gives (3.00 × 30 + 3 × 4.00) / 33 = 102 / 33 ≈ 3.09 and 33 total credits. The old credits act exactly like extra courses at grade 3.00.
- What additional GPA do I need to reach my target?
- The second calculator solves needed = (target × (current + additional) − currentGPA × current) / additional credits. From 3.00 over 60 credits, reaching 3.25 with 15 more credits needs (3.25 × 75 − 3.00 × 60) / 15 = 63.75 / 15 = 4.25 per new credit. If the result exceeds the 4.33 scale maximum the tool says the target is not achievable with those credits.
- Do P/NP courses affect my GPA?
- No. Pass/fail courses have no letter-grade points on this scale, so they are excluded from the weighted average; this calculator still counts their credits in total credits/hours so you can track progress toward graduation.

Privacy: every calculation runs in your browser tab — no grade, credit or GPA you type is sent anywhere. Copy result uses your clipboard only. Grading scales vary by school; this tool uses the 4.33-scale table shown above, so check your institution's own GPA policy before relying on the result.
