Watts to Megawatts Conversion

Megawatts are a far larger unit of power than watts, so a watt value always rewrites as a much smaller number in MW. Divide the power in watts by 1,000,000 to get the same power in megawatts.

How to convert watts to megawatts

Take the power in watts and divide it by 1,000,000; what is left is the same power stated in megawatts. The relationship goes both ways: 1 W = 0.000001 MW and 1 MW = 1,000,000 W.

In the calculator, type the power in watts into the input box and press Convert. The megawatt result appears next, ready to be read at a glance.

Watts to megawatts formula

P(MW) = P(W) / 1,000,000 — the power in megawatts equals the power in watts divided by 1,000,000.

Worked example: for 5 W, P(MW) = 5 W / 1,000,000 = 0.000005 MW, so five watts is five millionths of a megawatt.

To go the other way, multiply the megawatts by 1,000,000. A power of 2 MW is 2 x 1,000,000 = 2,000,000 W.
