Watts to Kilowatts Conversion
Convert a power reading from watts (W) to kilowatts (kW) with a single division by 1000. Type the number of watts, press Convert, and the matching kilowatt value appears as the result.
How to convert watts to kilowatts
Watts and kilowatts measure the same quantity, power, and differ by exactly one factor of one thousand: 1 kW = 1000 W. Because of that relationship, a watt figure becomes a kilowatt figure by dividing by 1000, and a kilowatt figure goes back to watts by multiplying by 1000.
Take a device rated at 1300 watts. Dividing by 1000 gives 1300 / 1000 = 1.3, so the same power is 1.3 kilowatts. Small ratings behave the same way: 60 W works out to 0.06 kW, which is why any watt value under 1000 shows up as a decimal part of a kilowatt.
With the converter you type the power in watts into the input, press Convert, and read the answer in kilowatts. Press Copy to keep the result at hand, or Clear to start again with a different watt value.
Watts to kilowatts formula
P(kW) = P(W) / 1000
The power in kilowatts equals the power in watts divided by 1000. Nothing else changes, because both units describe power; the division only shifts the decimal point three places to the left.
The inverse statement is just as short: 1 kW = 1000 W, so P(W) = P(kW) x 1000 whenever you need the watt figure back.
Quick checks without the calculator
Since the divisor is exactly 1000, the arithmetic is a decimal-point move rather than a calculation: 1 W is 0.001 kW, 10 W is 0.01 kW, and 100 W is 0.1 kW.
The same move scales in the other direction for large ratings, so 10000 W reads as 10 kW, 100000 W as 100 kW, and 1000000 W as 1000 kW. The table below walks through those steps.
| Power (watts) | Power (kilowatts) |
|---|---|
| 0 W | 0 kW |
| 1 W | 0.001 kW |
| 10 W | 0.01 kW |
| 100 W | 0.1 kW |
| 1000 W | 1 kW |
| 10000 W | 10 kW |
| 100000 W | 100 kW |
| 1000000 W | 1000 kW |
