VAT Calculator

A value added tax (VAT) calculator with two directions. Add VAT to a pre-tax amount to find the tax and the gross total, or Remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price to recover the net amount and the tax already inside it. Pick a country for a typical VAT rate or type any rate you need — everything is computed in your browser.

Picks a typical VAT rate; choose Other country to enter your own.

Pre-tax net for Add VAT · VAT-inclusive total for Remove VAT.

Set by the country list; edit freely.

STEP 1

Pick a country or set the rate

Choose a country — United Kingdom, Germany, France, Ireland, Australia, and more — to load a typical VAT rate, or select Other country and type your own rate in percent. The rate field always stays editable.

STEP 2

Enter the amount

Type the amount. For Add VAT this is the pre-tax net amount; for Remove VAT it is the VAT-inclusive total you already paid. The currency button next to the field only switches the display symbol (£, €, $) — it never converts numbers.

STEP 3

Add or Remove VAT

Press Add VAT to gross a net amount up, or Remove VAT to strip tax out of a gross amount. Read off the net amount, VAT rate, VAT amount, and gross amount, then Reset to start over.

How the math works

What formulas does this calculator use?
VAT amount = VAT rate (%) × net amount, and gross amount = net amount + VAT amount = net amount × (100% + VAT rate %). Remove VAT is the inverse: net amount = gross amount × 100 ÷ (100 + VAT rate), and the VAT inside the total is the gross amount minus the net amount.
Worked example
Net amount £100 at a 20% VAT rate: VAT amount = 20% × £100 = £20, and gross amount = £100 × (100% + 20%) = £120. Running Remove VAT on the £120 total at 20% recovers exactly £100 net and £20 of VAT.
Where do the country rates come from?
The country list loads commonly published standard VAT rates (for example the United Kingdom 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, Ireland 23%) as a quick starting point. Tax rates change over time and vary by region and good, so check your local authority and edit the rate freely — choosing Other country keeps whatever rate you type.
When do I use Remove VAT instead of Add VAT?
Use Add VAT when you hold a pre-tax price and need the tax-inclusive total (invoicing a customer). Use Remove VAT when a receipt already shows the VAT-inclusive price and you need to recover the net amount and the tax portion (booking a business expense, splitting a final bill).
Can the rate be 0%?
Yes. A 0% rate is valid: the VAT amount is 0 and the gross amount equals the net amount. Negative amounts and negative rates are rejected, and money outputs are rounded to cents.
