VA to kVA Calculator
Convert apparent power in volt-amps (VA) to kilovolt-amps (kVA). Enter the apparent power in volt-amps and press Calculate to get the apparent power in kilovolt-amps — one kilovolt-amp is exactly 1000 volt-amps. Everything runs locally in your browser.
Enter volt-amps
Type the apparent power in volt-amps (VA) into the field. Zero VA is allowed and simply gives 0 kVA; negative values are rejected because apparent power cannot be negative.
Press Calculate
The result appears in kilovolt-amps (kVA), rounded to at most three decimals. Dividing by 1000 is all there is to it — no power factor and no voltage is needed for this conversion.
Read kVA, or Reset
Read the result in the "Result in kilovolt-amps" field — e.g. 2500 VA becomes 2.5 kVA. Press Reset at any time to clear the input and the result and start over.
Volt-amps to kVA calculation
- How do you convert VA to kVA?
- The apparent power S in kilovolt-amps (kVA) is equal to the apparent power S in volt-amps (VA), divided by 1000: S(kVA) = S(VA) / 1000. For example, 2500 VA is 2500 / 1000 = 2.5 kVA.
- Why divide by 1000?
- "kilo" means 1000, so one kilovolt-amp equals exactly 1000 volt-amps — the same prefix relation as watts to kilowatts. Values below 1000 VA convert to fractional kVA: 500 VA = 0.5 kVA and 750 VA = 0.75 kVA.
- Do I need the power factor for VA to kVA?
- No. VA and kVA both measure apparent power, so the conversion is purely the 1000× unit scaling S(kVA) = S(VA) / 1000. The power factor only enters when converting apparent power (VA, kVA) to real power (W, kW): P(W) = S(VA) × PF.
- What is apparent power in volt-amps?
- Apparent power S is the product of RMS voltage and RMS current in an AC circuit, without accounting for phase shift between them. It is measured in volt-amps (VA) or kilovolt-amps (kVA); generators, UPS units and transformers are commonly rated in kVA.
- Worked example
- A 12345 VA load draws S(kVA) = 12345 / 1000 = 12.345 kVA. Conversely, a 15 kVA transformer can supply up to 15 × 1000 = 15000 VA of apparent power.
