Subtraction Calculator

Enter a first number and a second number, then press Calculate to get the difference. For example, 10 − 3 = 7.

What this tool does

This tool subtracts one number from another. There is a First number field and a Second number field, and one button: Calculate. Nothing is worked out until you press that button, and the difference then appears in cards below it.

The second number is taken away from the first, so the order you type the two numbers in matters. For First number: 10, Second number: 3 the tool shows Difference: 7, while for First number: 3, Second number: 10 it shows Difference: -7.

Once a result is on screen you can press Copy to put that result and its unit on the clipboard, or Clear to reset the form and start again.

Subtraction formula

The answer to a subtraction is called the difference: first number − second number = difference. Taking away a larger number leaves a difference below zero, and taking away the same amount leaves nothing, as in 0 − 0 = 0.

The worked examples cover whole numbers and decimals: 10 − 3 = 7, 3 − 10 = -7, 0.25 − 0.5 = -0.25, 1000 − 0.001 = 999.999, 0 − 0 = 0, and 0.3 − 0.1 = 0.2.
