Square Root Calculator

Pick square root, cube root or nth root, enter a number and press Calculate. The answer is listed in a card below the button, ready to copy or clear.

What this tool does

This calculator takes a number and returns its root: a square root, a cube root, or an nth root of the degree you set. Choose a mode, type the value and press Calculate, and the result shows up in a card under the button.

In Square root mode, you can also ask for a second root and join the two with +, −, × or ÷. In the sum √4 + √9 = 5 the tool takes the root of each number and then combines them, all in the same press of the button. Copy writes the result and its unit to the clipboard, and Clear resets the form.

The controls on the form

Mode selects the kind of root: Square root (√x), Cube root (∛x) or nth root (ⁿ√x). Number (x) holds the value you want the root of, and Root degree (n) is the degree you ask for in nth root mode.

Operation (optional) applies to Square root mode and starts on None (single root), which returns only the root of Number (x). Switching it to +, −, × or ÷ brings in Second number (for operation), and the two square roots are combined: Mode: Square root (√x), Number (x): 9, Operation (optional): −, Second number (for operation): 4 gives Square root: 1.

Root formula

A square root of x is a number that multiplied by itself gives x, written √x. Two from the worked list: √4 = 2 and √0.25 = 0.5.

A cube root of x is a number that multiplied by itself three times gives x, written ∛x. An nth root of x, written ⁿ√x, is a number that raised to the degree n returns x — you supply that degree in the Root degree (n) field.
