Scientific Notation Converter

Pick the mode that matches how your number is written, type the value, and press Convert. The decimal, scientific, E, and engineering forms of that value then appear in cards below the button.

How the converter works

The Mode selector decides which field you fill in. Decimal notation takes a number, Scientific notation takes Scientific: coefficient (a) and Scientific: exponent (b), and E notation takes text such as 5e3. Nothing is calculated until you press Convert.

The result cards then list one value in four forms: decimal notation, scientific notation, E notation, and engineering notation. Copy sends a result to the clipboard, and Clear resets the form.

Scientific notation formula

Scientific notation writes a value as a coefficient multiplied by ten raised to an exponent — a × 10^b, which is represented by Scientific: coefficient (a) and Scientific: exponent (b).

E notation is the same idea with a lowercase e in place of × 10^, which is why the worked examples read 5000 = 5 × 10^3 = 5e+3 and 0.008 = 8 × 10^-3 = 8e-3.

Going the other way, a coefficient of 1.23 and an exponent of 45 come out as 1230000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 = 1.23 × 10^45 = 1.23e+45.

Reading the results

The four forms can differ in how they look even though the value is identical. The table shows 720 as scientific notation 7.2 × 10^2 but as engineering notation 720 × 10^0.

Zero is handled the same way: 0 converts to 0 × 10^0 and 0e+0.
