Roots Calculator
Type a number and this calculator returns its square root or its nth root, depending on the calculation you pick. The answer shows up as a card under the Calculate button.
What the calculator does
The form has three fields: a Calculation selector offering Square root (√x) and nth root (ⁿ√x), a Number (x) box, and a Root degree (n) box. Press Calculate to run the calculation.
The answer appears in cards below the button. Copy writes a result and its unit to the clipboard, and Clear resets the form. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Root formula
The square root of a number x is written √x, and the nth root of x is written ⁿ√x, where n is the root degree. Those two writings are exactly the two Calculation options in the form.
A root asks for the value that multiplies by itself n times to give x. So √4 = ±2 and ³√8 = 2.
Reading the answer
Some answers list two signs, such as √4 = ±2 and √0.25 = ±0.5, while √0 = 0 gives a single value.
A negative number works as well: with a root degree of 3, ³√(-8) = -2.
Answers that do not come out even are shown as approximations, marked with ≈: √2 ≈ ±1.4142135623731.
