Remainder Calculator

What this tool does

Type the number to be divided into the Dividend box and the number to divide by into the Divisor box, then press Calculate. The form waits for that press before it computes anything, and the answers arrive in cards underneath the button.

Each card holds one result: the remainder, the integer quotient and the decimal quotient. Copy writes a result and its unit to the clipboard, and Clear resets the form so you can set up the next division.

Reading the three results

The remainder is what stays over once the divisor has been taken out of the dividend as many whole times as it fits, and the integer quotient counts those times. For Dividend: 17, Divisor: 5 the tool returns Remainder: 2, Quotient (integer): 3 and Quotient (decimal): 3.4.

The decimal quotient is the same division written as a single number, so it keeps the part past the whole number. For Dividend: 100, Divisor: 7 the answers are Remainder: 2, Quotient (integer): 14 and Quotient (decimal): about 14.2857142857143.

Both boxes take numbers, decimals and negatives included. A dividend of 17.5 with a divisor of 5 gives Remainder: 2.5, Quotient (integer): 3 and Quotient (decimal): 3.5, while a dividend of -17 with the same divisor of 5 gives Remainder: -2, Quotient (integer): -3 and Quotient (decimal): -3.4.

Remainder formula

The whole division reads: dividend ÷ divisor = quotient (integer) R remainder, where the R stands for the leftover, and the decimal quotient is simply the dividend divided by the divisor.

Straight from the tool output: 17 ÷ 5 = 3 R 2 (= 3.4) and 100 ÷ 7 = 14 R 2 (≈ 14.2857142857143), where the figure in brackets is the whole division as one decimal number. A negative dividend carries its sign into the leftover, as in -17 ÷ 5 = -3 R -2 (= -3.4).
