Playback Speed Calculator
Type how long the video or audio is, pick a speed, and see the real watch time, the time you save and — if you add a start time — the clock time you finish. Every other common speed is listed underneath for comparison.
How the watch time is worked out
Watching at a faster speed divides the running time by that speed. A 2 hour 28 minute film is 148 minutes; at 1.5x it takes 148 ÷ 1.5 = 98.67 minutes, which is 1 hour 38 minutes 40 seconds, and saves 49 minutes 20 seconds.
At 2x the same film takes 74 minutes, exactly half. At 1.25x it takes 118 minutes 24 seconds. The saving grows quickly at first and more slowly at high speeds: going from 1x to 1.5x saves a third of the time, going from 2x to 3x saves only a further sixth of the original length.
If you enter a start time such as 20:30 or 8:30 PM, the finish time is the start plus the shortened watch time, and a result after midnight is marked +1 day.
Where this helps
Course lectures, long podcasts and series catch-up are the usual reasons to speed up playback; 1.25x to 1.5x keeps speech easy to follow for most people. This tool only does the arithmetic — it does not play or upload anything.
| Speed | Watch time | Time saved |
|---|---|---|
| 1.25x | 1 hr 58 min 24 s | 29 min 36 s |
| 1.5x | 1 hr 38 min 40 s | 49 min 20 s |
| 1.75x | 1 hr 24 min 34 s | 1 hr 3 min 26 s |
| 2x | 1 hr 14 min | 1 hr 14 min |
