Percentage Increase Calculator
Enter an initial and a final value to get the percent change and the difference, or enter an initial value with a percent increase to get the final value.
How to calculate percentage increase
Type the initial (old) value and the final (new) value, then press Calculate. The tool takes the difference between the two numbers, divides it by the initial value and multiplies by 100 to turn that ratio into a percentage.
If the final value is smaller than the initial value the change is negative, so the answer is reported as a percentage decrease instead.
Percentage increase formula
Percentage increase = (final value - initial value) / initial value x 100%. The difference shown beside it is simply the final value minus the initial value.
Going from 1000 to 1200 the difference is 200, and 200 / 1000 x 100% = 20%. Going from 1000 to 800 the difference is -200, so the change is -20%, which reads as a decrease of 20%.
Final value from a percent increase
Leave the final value box empty and type a percentage instead. The added amount is the initial value times the percentage divided by 100, and the final value is the initial value plus that amount, which is the same as multiplying by (1 + percentage / 100).
A 20% increase on 1000 adds 1000 x 20 / 100 = 200, so the final value is 1200.
Notes
One calculation runs at a time: fill the final value to compare two numbers, or fill the percentage to grow the initial value.
The initial value cannot be zero when you compare two values, because dividing by zero leaves the percentage undefined.
| Initial value | Final value | Percentage change | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1000 | 1200 | 20% | 200 |
| 1000 | 800 | -20%, a decrease of 20% | -200 |
| 100 | 110 | 10% | 10 |
| 500 | 650 | 30% | 150 |
