Percent to ppm Conversion
A quick converter that turns a percentage into parts per million. Type the percent value, press Convert, and the ppm figure appears in a card underneath.
Percent and parts per million
A percent divides a whole into one hundred equal parts, while a part per million divides it into one million equal parts. One million is ten thousand times one hundred, so the same quantity always shows a number ten thousand times bigger when it is written in ppm instead of percent.
That makes ppm a handy way to write small shares that look cramped as a percent: 0.0001% is far easier to read as 1 ppm, and 0.01% reads more naturally as 100 ppm.
Percent to ppm formula
The starting point is 1% = 10000 ppm, which leads to the formula x(ppm) = 10000 * x(%). Take the percent figure, multiply it by the factor 10000, and the answer is in parts per million.
For example, to express 1.7% in ppm, work out 10000 * 1.7 = 17000, so 1.7% is 17000 ppm. Going the other way is just as simple: divide the ppm number by 10000 to get back to percent.
