Megahertz to Gigahertz Conversion
Enter a frequency in megahertz and press Convert to get the same frequency in gigahertz. One gigahertz is 1000 megahertz, so the megahertz value is divided by 1000.
Megahertz and gigahertz
Megahertz and gigahertz are both units of frequency. A megahertz counts one million cycles per second, while a gigahertz counts one billion cycles per second, which makes the gigahertz the larger of the two units.
Because a gigahertz holds exactly 1000 megahertz, a frequency written in megahertz becomes a number with a smaller magnitude when it is written in gigahertz. A 1 MHz signal is only 0.001 GHz, and a 1000 MHz signal is exactly 1 GHz.
Both units describe the same physical quantity, so nothing about the signal changes when you switch units. Only the number in front of the unit does.
MHz to GHz formula
To express a frequency f in gigahertz, take its megahertz value and divide by 1000:
f(GHz) = f(MHz) / 1000
Equivalently, multiply the megahertz value by 0.001, since 1 MHz = 0.001 GHz and 1 GHz = 1000 MHz.
For example, converting 3 megahertz gives f(GHz) = 3 MHz / 1000 = 0.003 GHz. Dividing by 1000 simply shifts the decimal point three places to the left, which is a quick way to sanity-check the result the converter returns.
Reading the conversion table
The table below lists common megahertz values next to their gigahertz equivalents, from 0 MHz up to 1000000 MHz. It is handy when you want a rough figure without doing the division yourself.
Values below 1000 MHz stay under 1 GHz and are usually written with decimal places; values of 1000 MHz and above reach whole gigahertz and are more often quoted in GHz.
| Megahertz (MHz) | Gigahertz (GHz) |
|---|---|
| 0 MHz | 0 GHz |
| 1 MHz | 0.001 GHz |
| 10 MHz | 0.01 GHz |
| 100 MHz | 0.1 GHz |
| 1000 MHz | 1 GHz |
| 10000 MHz | 10 GHz |
| 100000 MHz | 100 GHz |
| 1000000 MHz | 1000 GHz |
