kWh to Joules Conversion
This page changes an energy amount given in kilowatt-hours into the same energy expressed in joules. Type the figure, press Convert, and the joule value appears right away.
Kilowatt-hours and joules
Kilowatt-hours and joules are both units of energy, and one fixed number connects them: 1 kWh = 3600000 J. The same quantity is also written as 3.6 multiplied by ten to the sixth power, or 3.6 megajoules.
Because a single kilowatt-hour already accounts for so many joules, results in joules are large numbers. Five kilowatt-hours come to 18000000 J, and a thousand kilowatt-hours reach 3600000000 J.
The table listed below lines up common kilowatt-hour amounts with their joule equivalents, so a familiar figure can be read straight off the page instead of being multiplied by hand.
kWh to joules formula
To go from kilowatt-hours to joules, multiply the energy in kilowatt-hours by the factor 3600000. In symbols: E(J) = 3600000 x E(kWh), where E(kWh) is the amount you start with and E(J) is the energy in joules.
A worked example: 2 kWh becomes 3600000 x 2, which gives 7200000 J. Stepping up to 4 kWh gives 3600000 x 4, or 14400000 J, and 100 kWh gives 360000000 J.
Going the other way simply reverses the same relationship, so a value in joules can be turned back into kilowatt-hours by undoing this multiplication.
Using this kWh to joules calculator
Enter the energy in kilowatt-hours in the input box and press Convert. The result in joules is shown next to the field, and you can press Copy to take the number with you or Clear to blank the box and try another amount.
Any value works, not just the ones in the table: whole numbers and decimals are both handled by the same multiplication by 3600000.
