Kilowatts to Megawatts Conversion
One megawatt equals one thousand kilowatts, so a kilowatt figure becomes megawatts after a division by 1000. Enter any power in kW and the calculator returns the same power stated in MW.
How to convert kilowatts to megawatts
Kilowatts and megawatts both measure power, and the megawatt is the larger of the two by a factor of one thousand. Because of that fixed relationship, moving from kW to MW only needs a single division.
Type the power in kilowatts into the input box and press Convert. The result appears in megawatts right below it. Use Copy to keep the number for later, or Clear to start over with a new value.
kW to MW conversion formula
The power in megawatts P(MW) is equal to the power in kilowatts P(kW) divided by 1000:
P(MW) = P(kW) / 1000
This comes straight from the two equivalences: 1 MW = 1000 kW, which also means 1 kW = 0.001 MW.
Example: convert 5 kW to megawatts. P(MW) = 5 kW / 1000 = 0.005 MW.
Reading the two units side by side
The megawatt is the larger unit, so a megawatt figure is always one thousand times smaller than the same power stated in kilowatts. The table below lines up the round values on both scales, which makes a quick check possible without any arithmetic.
Going the other way is just as simple: a value in megawatts becomes kilowatts by multiplying by 1000.
| Power (kilowatts) | Power (megawatts) |
|---|---|
| 0 kW | 0 MW |
| 1 kW | 0.001 MW |
| 10 kW | 0.01 MW |
| 100 kW | 0.1 MW |
| 1000 kW | 1 MW |
| 10000 kW | 10 MW |
| 100000 kW | 100 MW |
| 1000000 kW | 1000 MW |
