What is kilowatt (kW)?

The kilowatt (kW) is a unit of power, and 1 kW = 1000 W. Type a value into any Power field, press Convert, and the cards below show it in milliwatts, watts, kilowatts, megawatts, gigawatts, dBm and dBW.

What the tool does

The form shows Power boxes for a number and a Convert button. The tool computes only when you press the button, and the results appear in cards below it.

Kilowatt definition

A kilowatt is 1000 watts. The same power in the other units this tool shows is 1000000 milliwatts and 0.001 megawatts.

Enter Power (kW): 1 and the cards read Power: 1000000 mW; Power: 1000 W; Power: 1 kW; Power: 0.001 MW.

Small and very large power

Small figures behave the same way. Power (dBW): 0 gives Power: 1000 mW; Power: 1 W; Power: 0.001 kW; Power: 0.000001 MW.

So do big ones. Power (MW): 2 gives Power: 2000000000 mW; Power: 2000000 W; Power: 2000 kW; Power: 2 MW, and the examples also give 2 MW = 2000000 W ≈ 93.0102999566398 dBm.

Kilowatt conversion formula

Kilowatts to watts: multiply by 1000. The worked examples state 1 kW = 1000 W = 60 dBm and 2 kW = 2000 W ≈ 63.0102999566398 dBm.

A decibel value to milliwatts: multiply 1 mW by 10 raised to that value divided by 10, as in P(mW) = 1 mW × 10^(50 / 10) = 100000 mW, which reads Power: 100000 mW; Power: 100 W; Power: 0.1 kW; Power: 0.0001 MW.

dBW to dBm: add 30, as in P(dBm) = 0 dBW + 30 = 30 dBm.
