Kilovolts to Volts (kV to V)

Type a voltage in kilovolts and get the same voltage in volts. One kilovolt is 1000 V, so the result is the input multiplied by 1000.

Kilovolts and volts

The volt is the everyday unit of electrical potential. The kilovolt is a larger multiple of it: the prefix kilo stands for one thousand, so a kilovolt holds exactly 1000 volts.

Kilovolts are a convenient shorthand once a potential is large, because the same figure written in volts becomes a long number. Below a thousand volts it is usually simpler to stay with volts.

Going from volts back to kilovolts

The reverse step undoes the first one: divide the number of volts by 1000. A single volt works out to 0.001 kV, so a potential of 2500 V is 2.5 kV.

kV to volts formula

The voltage V in volts is equal to the voltage V in kilovolts multiplied by 1000:

V(V) = V(kV) x 1000

Worked example: 3 kilovolts gives V(V) = 3 kV x 1000 = 3000 V.
