Kilojoules to Joules Conversion
Kilojoules and joules are both units of energy, and one kilojoule is exactly 1000 joules. Type an amount in kilojoules, press Convert, and the same energy expressed in joules appears right away.
How to convert kilojoules to joules
Kilojoules and joules measure the same thing, so the change is a matter of scale: the kilo- prefix means a thousand, which makes every kilojoule worth 1000 joules.
Type the energy in kilojoules into the field and press Convert to see the result in joules. Copy keeps the figure on your clipboard and Clear empties the field for the next amount.
kJ to J formula
E(J) = E(kJ) x 1000 — the energy in joules equals the energy in kilojoules multiplied by 1000.
For example, converting 3 kilojoules means taking 3 x 1000, which gives 3000 joules. Working the other way is the same relationship in reverse: joules divided by 1000 gives kilojoules.
Common kJ to J values
Small fractions of a kilojoule are worth a few joules each, so 0.001 kJ is 1 J and 0.1 kJ is 100 J.
Whole kilojoules simply gain three zeros: 1 kJ is 1000 J, 10 kJ is 10000 J, and 100 kJ is 100000 J. The chart below lists the pairs side by side.
