Kilojoules to Calories Converter
Enter an amount in kilojoules and pick the calorie you want the answer in: the Large/food calorie (Cal), the small thermochemical calorie (cal), or the small 15°C calorie. Press Convert to get the result.
What this converter does
It takes an amount of energy written in kilojoules and shows the same energy in calories. A select next to the number field chooses which calorie to use: the Large/food calorie (Cal) at 4184 J, the small thermochemical calorie (cal) at exactly 4.184 J, or the small 15°C calorie at about 4.1855 J.
Nothing is worked out until you press Convert, and the result then appears in a card below the button. Copy writes the result and its unit to the clipboard, and Clear resets the form.
The kilojoules to calories formula
One thermochemical calorie is exactly 4.184 J by definition, and one food calorie (Cal) is 1 kcal, which is 4184 J. The 15°C calorie is about 4.1855 J.
Multiply the kilojoules by the factor for the calorie you picked: for the food calorie 1 kJ = 0.239005736137667 cal, for the small thermochemical calorie 1 kJ = 239.005736137667 cal, and for the small 15°C calorie 1 kJ = 238.920081232828 cal.
Reading the table
The table below is worked out with the Large/food calorie (Cal), 4184 J. For example, 5 kJ lines up with 1.19502868 cal, and 100 kJ lines up with 23.9005736 cal.
| Kilojoules (kJ) | Calories (cal) |
|---|---|
| 1 kJ | 0.239005736 cal |
| 2 kJ | 0.478011472 cal |
| 5 kJ | 1.19502868 cal |
| 10 kJ | 2.39005736 cal |
| 20 kJ | 4.78011472 cal |
| 50 kJ | 11.9502868 cal |
| 100 kJ | 23.9005736 cal |
| 1000 kJ | 239.005736 cal |
