Kilojoules to BTU Conversion
This page changes an amount of energy written in kilojoules into the same amount expressed in British thermal units. Enter a figure in the kJ field, press Convert, then use Copy to keep the answer or Clear to try another value.
Changing kilojoules into BTU
Kilojoules and BTU are both units of energy, so a kilojoule figure can be restated as BTU without losing any amount. The BTU used throughout this page is the International Table unit, written BTU (IT).
The two units sit close together in size: one BTU (IT) is defined as exactly 1.05505585262 kilojoules, so a kilojoule is the slightly smaller unit and the BTU figure you get back is always a little lower than the number you started with.
Kilojoules to BTU formula
Take the energy in kilojoules and divide it by 1.05505585262 to obtain the energy in BTU: E(BTU) = E(kJ) / 1.05505585262. That is the same as a factor of 1 over 1.05505585262, which works out to about 0.947817 BTU for each kilojoule.
As an example, an energy of 0.5 kJ gives 0.5 / 1.05505585262, which is about 0.473909 BTU (IT). Going the other way, multiply a BTU figure by 1.05505585262 to come back to kilojoules.
