Joules to Watts Calculator
Convert energy in joules (J) to power in watts (W). Enter the energy in joules and the time period in seconds, then press Calculate — the power result appears in watts, divided straight from P = E / t. Everything runs locally in your browser.
Enter energy in joules
Type the energy E in joules (J) — the amount of work done or energy consumed. Zero joules is fine and gives 0 W.
Enter time in seconds
Type the time period t in seconds (s). It must be a non-zero number, because the power divides the energy by the time.
Press Calculate, read watts
The power P appears in watts (W). Copy the result to your clipboard, or press Reset to clear everything and start over.
How joules become watts
- What is the joules-to-watts formula?
- The power P in watts (W) is equal to the energy E in joules (J), divided by the time period t in seconds (s): P(W) = E(J) / t(s). One watt is the rate of one joule of energy expended per second.
- Worked example
- If a device consumes 100 J of energy in 10 s, its average power is P = 100 J / 10 s = 10 W. Likewise 60 J delivered over 5 s gives 60 / 5 = 12 W.
- Why does zero time give an error?
- P = E / t divides by the time period, and division by zero is undefined — energy expended in no time at all has no finite power. A time of exactly 0 s is rejected instead of showing a meaningless infinite result. Zero energy, on the other hand, is valid: 0 J / t s = 0 W.
- What about negative values?
- The arithmetic is defined for a negative energy or a negative time period (P = −100 J / 10 s = −10 W), which corresponds to energy flowing in the opposite direction — for example a battery being charged rather than discharged. Both compute here rather than being rejected.
- How accurate is the result?
- Results are computed in standard double-precision arithmetic and displayed with float noise trimmed at ten-decimal rounding, so 100 / 10 shows as exactly 10 and 10 / 3 as 3.3333333333.
