Joules and kilowatt-hours

Both units measure energy, but they sit at very different scales. The joule is by far the smaller one, so a figure written in joules becomes a very small number once it is restated in kilowatt-hours: a single joule is only 0.0000002778 kWh.

Because the two units are linked by one fixed ratio, every conversion is a plain division. That means you can confirm any result the calculator gives with a quick hand check, and the listed values line up with the arithmetic to ten decimal places.

Joules to kWh formula

The energy in kilowatt-hours E(kWh) equals the energy in joules E(J) divided by 3600000: E(kWh) = E(J) / 3600000. The conversion factor is 1/3600000, which is the same as multiplying by 2.777778 × 10^-7.

Worked example: 5400000 J / 3600000 = 1.5 kWh. A result shown with ten decimal places, such as 0.0000002778 kWh for 1 J, is simply that exact fraction rounded for display.
