GeV to eV Converter
Gigaelectron-volts and electron-volts are both units of energy, and one gigaelectron-volt is exactly 1000000000 electron-volts. Type an amount in GeV, press Convert, and read the same energy expressed in eV.
About gigaelectron-volts and electron-volts
The electron-volt is a very small unit of energy, and the gigaelectron-volt is its billion-fold multiple: the giga prefix stands for one thousand million, so 1 GeV = 1000000000 eV. For one and the same energy, the figure stated in eV is therefore one billion times larger than the figure stated in GeV.
Because that step is a single power of ten, converting downwards only moves the decimal point nine places to the right. A reading of 5 GeV becomes 5000000000 eV, while a small 0.001 GeV becomes 1000000 eV.
GeV to eV formula
E(eV) = E(GeV) x 1000000000
In words, the energy measured in electron-volts equals the energy measured in gigaelectron-volts multiplied by 1000000000. For example, converting 5 GeV gives E(eV) = 5 x 1000000000 = 5000000000 eV, because 1 GeV = 1000000000 eV.
Going the other way is the inverse: an amount in electron-volts divided by 1000000000 gives gigaelectron-volts.
