Frequency Conversion

Enter a frequency and choose the unit you have — hertz, kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz or terahertz — then press Convert. The result shows that same frequency written in hertz, kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz and terahertz.

About this converter

This tool converts a frequency between hertz (Hz), kilohertz (kHz), megahertz (MHz), gigahertz (GHz) and terahertz (THz). You type a number into the Frequency field, pick the unit that number is written in from the Unit list, and press the Convert button.

The answers appear in cards below the button, one card for each unit. Every card has a Copy action, and a Clear action resets the form.

How the converter behaves

Nothing is worked out until you press Convert, so the cards only ever show the value you converted last. Copy writes a result and its unit to the clipboard, which makes the number easy to paste into your own notes. Clear resets the form so you can start again.

Everything runs in the browser and nothing is uploaded. A zero is handled like any other value: Frequency: 0, Unit: Hertz (Hz) returns Hertz: 0 Hz; Kilohertz: 0 kHz; Megahertz: 0 MHz; Gigahertz: 0 GHz; Terahertz: 0 THz.

Frequency conversion formula

Frequency is counted in hertz, and each larger unit on this scale is a step of 1000 above the one before it: kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz, terahertz. Converting only moves the number along that scale, so the frequency stays the same and just gets written in a different unit.

The worked examples show those steps exactly. Frequency: 1, Unit: Kilohertz (kHz) gives Hertz: 1000 Hz; Kilohertz: 1 kHz; Megahertz: 0.001 MHz; Gigahertz: 0.000001 GHz; Terahertz: 0.000000001 THz. Frequency: 1, Unit: Gigahertz (GHz) gives Hertz: 1000000000 Hz; Kilohertz: 1000000 kHz; Megahertz: 1000 MHz; Gigahertz: 1 GHz; Terahertz: 0.001 THz, and Frequency: 0.5, Unit: Terahertz (THz) gives Hertz: 500000000000 Hz; Kilohertz: 500000000 kHz; Megahertz: 500000 MHz; Gigahertz: 500 GHz; Terahertz: 0.5 THz.

The same frequency read from the other end of the scale lines up too: Frequency: 100, Unit: Megahertz (MHz) returns Hertz: 100000000 Hz; Kilohertz: 100000 kHz; Megahertz: 100 MHz; Gigahertz: 0.1 GHz; Terahertz: 0.0001 THz.
