eV to MeV Conversion

What the eV to MeV conversion does

An electron-volt (eV) and a mega-electron-volt (MeV) measure the same thing, energy, at very different sizes. The prefix in front of the second unit makes it a million times larger, so a positive figure written in electron-volts turns into a much smaller number once it is written in mega-electron-volts.

One electron-volt is exactly one millionth of a mega-electron-volt, which means 1 eV = 0.000001 MeV. Because the step between the two units is a fixed factor of 1000000, the conversion is the same arithmetic no matter how large or small the value is.

Divide the energy in electron-volts by 1000000 to get the energy in mega-electron-volts:

E(MeV) = E(eV) / 1000000

For example, converting 500 eV: 500 eV / 1000000 = 0.0005 MeV. Equivalently, since the factor is 1/1000000, each electron-volt contributes 0.000001 MeV to the total.
