eV to GeV Conversion
Use this calculator to change an energy measured in electron-volts (eV) into giga-electron-volts (GeV). Type the amount, press Convert, and the GeV figure appears in a card below the buttons.
About the eV to GeV conversion
The electron-volt and the giga-electron-volt are both units of energy. The prefix giga means one billion, so a giga-electron-volt is a billion electron-volts, which makes it a convenient way to write an eV figure without a long string of zeros.
Because the two units differ by exactly one billion, going from eV to GeV means dividing by 1000000000. Small eV values therefore come out as very small GeV values, and the number in GeV is one billionth of the number in eV, because the unit itself is one billion times larger.
The calculator does that division for you. Enter the energy in electron-volts, press Convert, and read the outcome in giga-electron-volts. You can copy the result or clear the field to try another amount.
eV to GeV conversion formula
One giga-electron-volt equals one billion electron-volts: 1 GeV = 1000000000 eV, so 1 eV = 0.000000001 GeV.
The energy E in giga-electron-volts is the energy E in electron-volts divided by 1000000000:
E(GeV) = E(eV) / 1000000000
Example: convert 5 eV to GeV. 5 divided by 1000000000 is 0.000000005, so 5 eV = 0.000000005 GeV.
