Degrees, Minutes, Seconds to Decimal Degrees Conversion

Enter the degrees, the minutes and the seconds of an angle and press Convert to get the same angle written as decimal degrees. The result is worked out from the parts alone: 1 degree is 60 minutes and 1 minute is 60 seconds.

How this converter works

The form asks for one angle in three parts: degrees, minutes and seconds. Put a number in each part, then press Convert. That press is what does the calculation, and the decimal degrees appear in a card below the button.

Copy writes that result and its unit to the clipboard, and Clear resets the form so you can enter another angle. The whole calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded.

Decimal degrees formula

Decimal degrees = d + m/60 + s/3600, where d is the degrees you entered, m is the minutes and s is the seconds. The divisors come straight from the units: 1 degree is 60 minutes and 1 minute is 60 seconds, so minutes are shared out over 60 and seconds over 3600 before being added to the whole degrees.

A minus sign written on the degrees applies to the whole angle, not to the degrees on their own, so the minutes and seconds of that angle are negative along with it. The table below lists angles and the decimal degrees they convert to.
