Electrical Charge Converter

Enter an amount of charge, choose the unit it is written in and press Convert. The results show up in cards below the button.

What this tool does

Type a number in the Charge field, pick the unit that number is already in from the Unit list — coulombs (C), millicoulombs (mC), microcoulombs (μC), nanocoulombs (nC), picocoulombs (pC), electron charge (e) or ampere-hours (Ah) — and press Convert.

Nothing is worked out until you press the button, so you can change the number or the unit first. Once the results are on screen, Copy puts a result together with its unit on the clipboard, and Clear empties the form so you can start over.

Units on the list

The coulomb (C) is the unit of electrical charge that the rest of the list is scaled from, and the first four entries use the usual prefixes: a millicoulomb is a thousandth of a coulomb, a microcoulomb is a millionth, a nanocoulomb is a billionth and a picocoulomb is a trillionth.

The last two entries carry the units you meet on a battery label and in atom-sized numbers: the ampere-hour (Ah) and the electron charge (e). Entering Charge: 1, Unit: Coulombs (C) shows all seven converted units at once, from metric steps to battery and particle scales.

Electrical charge conversion formula

Every amount is treated as a certain number of coulombs first, then written out again in the other units, so the whole list is just rescaling. The plain relations behind the figures are 1 C = 1000 mC, 1 C = 1000000 μC and 1 C = 1000000000 nC, and all three are visible in that first worked example.

For the two units off the metric ladder the tool’s own numbers say it plainly: Charge: 2.5, Unit: Ampere-hours (Ah) gives Coulombs: 9000 C, and Charge: 1, Unit: Electron charge (e) gives Coulombs: 0.0000000000000000001602176634 C. Smaller amounts follow the same rule — Charge: 500, Unit: Nanocoulombs (nC) returns Coulombs: 0.0000005 C, and Charge: 2, Unit: Microcoulombs (μC) returns Coulombs: 0.000002 C.
