BTU per hour to watts conversion

BTUs per hour and watts are two ways of stating the same thing: power. Since 1 BTU/hr equals about 0.29307107 W, any heat rating in BTU/hr can be restated in watts here.

Converting BTU/hr to watts

A BTU per hour rates how much heat energy flows in one hour, and you will usually see it on heating and cooling equipment. The watt is the metric unit of power, used for electrical and mechanical ratings, so a conversion is needed whenever the two figures have to be compared.

Type the power in BTU/hr into the input and press Convert. The equivalent power in watts appears with the result, ready to copy, and Clear empties the field for the next figure.

BTU/hr to watts formula

P (W) ≈ P (BTU/hr) x 0.29307107. Multiplying a value in BTUs per hour by about 0.29307107 gives the power in watts. The multiplier comes from the definition: one IT BTU is exactly 1055.05585262 joules and an hour is 3600 seconds, so 1055.05585262 / 3600 ≈ 0.29307107.

You can divide instead: P (W) ≈ P (BTU/hr) / 3.412141633, because one watt is about 3.412141633 BTU/hr. The two factors agree to roughly 9 digits.

Worked example: 20000 x 0.29307107 = 5861.4214, so 20000 BTU/hr is about 5861.42 W.
