Binary to String Converter

Decodes binary byte values into text. Choose a character encoding, enter the bytes and press Convert.

What this tool does

This page decodes binary byte values into text. Type the bytes into the text field and choose a character encoding from the select: ASCII, UTF-8, UTF-16 little endian or UTF-16 big endian. The bytes may be separated by spaces or commas, or run together with no separator at all.

ASCII uses one byte per character for codes 0 to 127. UTF-8 uses one to four bytes for a character. No other encodings are offered here.

How the result is shown

The form computes only when you press Convert, so nothing moves while you are still typing. The result appears in a card below the button.

Copy writes the result to the clipboard and Clear resets the form. Everything runs in the browser and nothing is uploaded.

Byte to character formula

Decoding maps each byte value to the character that the chosen encoding gives it. In the ASCII table below, 01000001 stands for A, 01000010 stands for B and 01011010 stands for Z, while 00110000 stands for 0, 00111001 for 9, 00100001 for ! and 00111111 for ?.

Bytes entered as 01000001 01000010 00100001 come back as AB!, one character per row of that table. The spaces are only separators; under UTF-8 a single character can take one to four of those bytes instead.
