Binary to Hex Converter
Type a binary number and read off its hexadecimal equivalent, with the decimal and octal values shown alongside. A sign, a fractional point and a run of numbers separated by spaces are all accepted, and letters come out uppercase.
What the converter shows
There is a single text field. Write your base 2 number in it and press Convert; nothing is worked out before you press it. The answer appears in a card below the button, with the hexadecimal value next to the decimal and octal ones.
The field also takes a leading sign and a fractional point, and you can enter several numbers separated by spaces instead of one. Each number is converted on its own, and any letter in the answer prints in uppercase.
Binary and hexadecimal
Binary is base 2, so every place in a binary number stands for a power of 2 and each digit is worth twice the place to its right. Hexadecimal is base 16, so every place there stands for a power of 16 and each digit is worth sixteen times the place to its right.
Because base 16 has sixteen single digits, the ten figures 0 to 9 are followed by the letters A to F. The table shows both ends of that: 1010 comes out as A and 1111 comes out as F.
Binary to hexadecimal formula
Split the binary digits into groups of four, counting outwards from the fractional point, and write each group as a single hexadecimal digit. That is the reading the table follows: its hexadecimal column carries one digit for every full group of four in the binary column.
The table does exactly this. The row 1111 becomes F in one group. Adding a leading digit gives the row 11111, which splits into 1 and 1111 and reads 1F, and 11111111 splits into two groups of 1111 and reads FF.
Longer rows follow the same path: 1100100 splits into 110 and 0100 and comes out as the row 64, while 100000000 splits into 1, 0000 and 0000 and comes out as the row 100.
