Difficulty here is the number of clues left on the board after the generator finishes digging: easy keeps 40–50 givens, medium 30–39, hard 23–29, and expert 23–26 (aiming at 23 — the floor of this uniqueness-preserving digger). Fewer givens means longer chains of deduction before the next digit falls out — but never a guess. Every board is checked by a solver that stops as soon as it finds a second solution, so a puzzle is only published once it has been proved to have exactly one.
The daily board is generated from the date itself, so every visitor on a given UTC day solves the identical puzzle — your time is directly comparable to anyone else's, and the share block carries your time and difficulty without spoiling a single digit.
