What the job actually is

Turn a description into a character that reads at a glance, holds up from every angle, and can be handed to other artists. Deliverables are turnarounds, expression sheets, and callouts — documents, not single images.

AI impact, step by step

A judgment call, written by hand, about which parts of this job a current model genuinely absorbs. Not a score. If you think a line is wrong, it is meant to be arguable — that is the point of writing it at this resolution.

Absorbed by models

  • Silhouette and costume ideation — the wide, cheap first pass.
  • One-off portrait commissions where nobody ever needs the character again.
  • Reference-plate assembly and style-matching studies.

Scarcer, so worth more

  • Designing for reproduction: a character other people can redraw on-model without you in the room.
  • Readability constraints — silhouette at 32px, colour under a UI overlay, costume that survives rigging.
  • Sheet craft. The turnaround and expression sheet is the actual product; a single beautiful image is not.
  • Ownership hygiene, because a design that ships in a product has to be clean at the licence level.

Still can't do it

  • Consistency as a hard requirement rather than a happy accident.
  • Designing against downstream constraints the model has never met — rig, engine, budget, ESRB, the client’s existing cast.
  • Iterating with a team over weeks while keeping every earlier decision intact.

What that rests on

This is the segment with the most movement in and out of taking work.

In the tracked cohort, character designers show both a high share of open commission listings and the highest share of “commissions closed” — the group is churning between selling and not selling faster than any other.

Paid demand is concentrated in games and TTRPG, not editorial.

Nearly every high-budget hiring post on the open boards in the sample was a game, visual novel, board game, or D&D commission.
